KQED Radio Fundraising Drive PDF Print E-mail

Thank you to all of the members that went to the KQED event that took place on Sunday, September 18th! Homestead FBLA truly made headway in helping out our community by raising $66,418 in a 5 hour shift for KQED's radio station. In addition to taking pledges from listeners, members also signed cards for local businesses that donate to KQED and went on a mini business tour of the KQED headquarters after the volunteering event. We met Michelle Henagan, an on-air public broadcaster, and saw KQED's recording tape library, their servers, and learned about KQED history.

Overall, this was an amazingly fun and productive fundraising event. Again, thank you to all of the volunteers that contributed their time and service to help continue to provide the Bay Area audience with quality programming and the best public broadcasting has to offer.
Keep your eyes open for more information coming soon if you are interested in participating in future KQED events!
Regards,
Matthew Chow

Thank you to everyone who came to the very exciting competitions meeting! In case you weren't able to pick up a copy today, you can download them here if you are a registered member! Here are some other important reminders:

Great job to all of the volunteers at the KQED Radio Drive who were able to raise over $66,000! We also have more exciting events coming up for the month of October:
  1. Our first ever joint social with Los Altos High School FBLA will be on October 1st from 5:30-9:30pm. We'll be eating at Fresh Choice and going ice skating! Sign up on the website for more details.
  2. The very popular Step Out for Diabetes Walk will be on October 9th. All interested volunteers need to fill out a waiver bring it on the day of the event. More information and sign ups can be found here.
There will be a Competitions Pizza Social this Friday during lunch in A207. All of your officers and many nationals competitors will be there to answer any questions. If you're confused about which competitions you should try out for, how the tryouts work, or any other questions, come to get them answered! If you would like to purchase pizza, the slices are $1 each and you must pre-order, so we make sure we adhere to school rules. If you didn't pay your money at the end of the meeting today, you can also pay tomorrow during lunch in A207. We unfortunately cannot accept any meeting the day of the social.

Fill out your competitions request sheet by October 11th, and if you're interested in competing in Virtual Business Challenge, sign up on the interest sheet outside of A207 by Friday! Project meetings will also be occurring all of this week, so make sure you check those out.

Let us know if you have any questions! We hope to see you at the Competitions Social on Friday :)

Best,
Jasmine and Evanny

New to FBLA Guide PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jasmine Stoy
Saturday, 22 August 2009 10:21

This is a detailed guide to everything going on in FBLA. If you have any questions please ask or email one of the officers.

Officers

You can find out about our contact information and who does what in our club on the Officers page. More detailed Officer Profiles are available in the first issue of the Homestead Horizon, HHS FBLA’s official magazine.

Meetings

We generally hold meetings every other Tuesday starting with the first meeting on August 30th. At the meetings we will give important announcements about club activity including reports and event opportunities from our Projects (see below) and Competitions (also see below).

Projects

FBLA has three central projects which are often considered the “heart and soul” of our club: American Enterprise (AE), Community Service (CS), and Partnership with Business (PwB). We are still deciding the specifics of this year’s projects, but each project usually falls under a unique theme:

  • American Enterprise - Whether it be teaching middle schoolers about business or senior citizens about finances, the AE project usually teaches some part of the community about a business-related topic.
  • Community Service – The CS project is all about volunteering to improve and make a lasting impact on our local community.
  • Partnership with Business – As its name suggests, PwB teams up with a business to both help and learn from them.

Events

Homestead FBLA often holds Volunteer events and Business Tours both as part of the three core projects, and also some that are separate from them. These events are a great chance for you to earn Activity Points and Volunteer Hours, and to meet and learn from new people. Sign Ups for events will be available at meetings as well as online after logging in to your official member account.

Competitions

Many people join FBLA for the competitions that we offer. Competitive Events are offered in an enormous amount of different areas ranging from Business Related to Technology Related. Placing high in your event usually means earning a shiny trophy or plaque, and a cash prize! The competitive events are held at three different levels:

  • The Bay Section Leadership Conference (BSLC), March 3th 2012 – This year held at Cupertino High School, it is the first level of events where we compete with schools around the bay area.
  • The State Leadership Conference (SLC), April 19th-22th, 2012– Statewide competitors will meet and compete in Southern California's Irvine. Depending on if you place high enough (usually the first 3-5 places in your event at BSLC) you may get to compete at this four day conference.
  • The National Leadership Conference (NLC), June 29th-July 2st, 2012 – The ultimate culmination of competitions, the NLC will be held this year in San Antonio, Texas. If you place high enough at state you will get to meet and compete with people from all across the country. The NLC is also preceded by the Institute for Leaders (IFL), a two day intensive leadership training course from June 28th-29th.
You can learn more about the events by downloading the Competitive Events Description Document in the Document Library, or by checking out our successes in the past under Competition History.

Activity Points, Hours, and Accounts

Your involvement in FBLA is kept track by Activity Points and the Hours you spend in our Volunteer Events. You get 3 points per hour you volunteered, and you can also earn points by attending General Meetings, competing in events, and participating in other FBLA activities. These Points and Hours may be factored into decisions like the outcome of event tryouts, the member of the month award, and next year’s officer applications. Also, we may be handing out prizes to high point earners as the year progresses.

Your Activity Points and Hours can all be checked online when you login with your online account.

Announcements

Missed a meeting? Just started coming to meetings? Don’t worry, all important announcements will also be made on this website on the Homepage and in the News Section.

State and Nationals

You can find out more about the entire organization at California FBLA's Site: https://cafbla.org/ and the National FBLA Site: https://fbla-pbl.org/

Joining FBLA

Becoming an official HHS FBLA member is actually very simple. All it involves is filling out a membership application online and a one-time membership fee ($11 cash or check payable to Homestead FBLA, or $20 with a T-shirt). Although there isn't really a due date for you to become a member, we can't track your Activity Points or Volunteer Hours until you are registered, and you can't compete in competitive events until you are a paid member, so you are encouraged to join as soon as you can.
